Introduction to Operating System upgrade

Introduction to details of operating system upgrade on the Managed Web Service

The operating system currently used on the Managed Web Service is Debian Jessie. This is scheduled to go out of support at the beginning of June 2018. We are therefore planning the upgrade of the MWS servers to the next version of the operating system, Debian Stretch.

Debian have some general notes on the changes between the two operating system versions at https://wiki.debian.org/NewInStretch    and https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch/amd64/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html

We have some initial notes on the changes to PHP and Python

The MySQL database will be replaced with MariaDB

Early next year we plan to make available test versions of your MWS servers, so that you can check whether your websites will work correctly in Debian Stretch. We will provide further documentation then to give guidance through the upgrade procedure.
